Choosing Timber: Construction vs Furniture Grade Wood
When buying timber, the first decision is whether you need construction-grade or furniture-grade wood. Each has different requirements for strength, appearance, and cost.
Construction Timber
Construction timber needs to be strong, straight, and affordable. Popular choices in Lahore:
- Deodar (Cedar) — Excellent for framing, roof structures, and structural work. Light but strong.
- Pine (Chir) — Budget-friendly option for shuttering, temporary structures, and general construction.
- Sal — Heavy-duty hardwood for load-bearing beams and structural columns.
Construction timber is graded primarily on strength rather than appearance. Knots and minor defects are acceptable as long as structural integrity is maintained.
Furniture Timber
Furniture timber needs beauty, workability, and durability:
- Teak (Sagwan) — The gold standard. Beautiful grain, naturally resistant to termites and moisture. Ideal for premium furniture.
- Sheesham (Rosewood) — Rich color and distinctive grain patterns. Perfect for traditional and carved furniture.
- Deodar — Also used for furniture, especially doors, window frames, and paneling.
Furniture timber is graded on appearance — fewer knots, consistent color, and straight grain command higher prices.
